Built to fit

Custom Business Software Development

You should not have to change how your business works to suit somebody else's software. Custom software is built the other way round: designed around the way you already work. Based in Dundee, working with businesses across Scotland and the United Kingdom.

From £1,885 Starting price. Final cost depends on what the project needs.

Who it is for

  • Businesses whose process does not match any product on the market
  • Companies paying for three systems that each do part of the job
  • Operations held together by spreadsheets and habit
  • Businesses where one person is the only one who knows the system
  • Anyone rekeying the same information into two places
  • Companies whose growth is limited by their admin

What it solves

  • Off-the-shelf software that nearly fits, and the workarounds that follow
  • Paying per user per month, forever, for features you do not use
  • A process spread across a spreadsheet, an inbox and a paper diary
  • No reliable reporting, because the numbers live in four places
  • Knowledge that exists only in one person's head
  • Being told a change is not possible because the software will not allow it

What can be included

Not every project needs everything here. The scope is agreed before work starts, and the quotation reflects what you actually asked for.

Management

  • Job and project management
  • Customer management and CRM
  • Scheduling and calendars
  • Staff and resource tracking

Money

  • Quotes and estimates
  • Invoicing
  • Parts and stock
  • Cost and margin reporting

Output

  • Reporting and dashboards
  • Document generation
  • Reminders and notifications
  • Exports

Underneath

  • Database designed for your data
  • Access levels
  • Workflow automation
  • Backups
  • Integrations

What you get out of it

  • Software that fits the business instead of the business bending to the software
  • One system rather than three subscriptions and a spreadsheet
  • Reporting you can trust, because the numbers have one source
  • The process written down in software rather than held in someone's memory
  • Something you own, which can be changed when the business changes

What you receive

  • A written specification before any code is written
  • Working software, built and reviewed in stages
  • Your data migrated from wherever it lives now
  • Documentation of what it does and why
  • Training for the people who use it
  • Backups configured and tested
  • A support period after launch

What is needed from you

  • An honest walkthrough of how the work flows today
  • The exceptions and edge cases, which matter more than the normal path
  • Someone who can make decisions when a question comes up
  • Existing spreadsheets or records to migrate
  • Time to review each stage
Security considered from the start. Every project includes appropriate security checks during development and before launch. Depending on what is being built, that can include secure connections, software and access configuration, protected forms, safe handling of any keys the project needs, backups, and testing before anything goes live. Where relevant, development practices take recognised guidance from organisations such as OWASP and the UK National Cyber Security Centre into consideration.

Standards and guidance this work follows

Not a certification claim. These are the published references the work is measured against, so the decisions are somebody else's tested thinking rather than only mine.

OWASP

The Open Worldwide Application Security Project. Its guidance on authentication, access control, input validation, session handling and safe error messages informs how anything with a login or a form is built.

Information Commissioner’s Office

UK data protection guidance. Shapes what a form asks for, how long information is kept, what a privacy notice says, and how cookies are handled.

National Cyber Security Centre

UK government guidance on small business security, account protection, device management and backups. Used as the reference point for what good practice looks like.

Following recognised guidance is not the same as holding an independent certification, and none is claimed here.

How it works

  1. Understand the business

How the work actually flows, including the bits that only happen occasionally. This is where the value is created.

  2. Scope and quote

A written specification of what gets built, and a fixed quotation.

  3. Build in stages

Working software early, reviewed as it goes, so nothing is a surprise at the end.

  4. Launch and support

Data brought across, staff trained, and support while it beds in.

Common questions

How much does custom software cost?

From £1,885. It is genuinely scope-driven, so the honest answer comes after a conversation rather than before one. You get a fixed written quotation before any work begins.

Can custom software replace spreadsheets?

Yes, and that is the most common reason people ask. Not every spreadsheet problem needs a full system though: sometimes business automation solves it for a fraction of the cost.

Can you build software around our existing process?

That is the point of it. I will also flag anywhere the current process is causing the problem rather than solving it, but the decision is yours.

What if the business changes later?

It can be changed. That is a real advantage over a product, where you wait for a vendor to decide your request matters.

Start with the problem

Tell me what is slowing the business down and how it is handled today. That conversation costs nothing and usually clarifies a lot.
